ABOUT MONIKA

"The soprano raises hopes for her further development with her fresh lyrical voice, which already shows some potential for expansion."

Ekkehard Pluta, klassik-heute.de

The extremely versatile soprano's great passion lies in lieder singing. She and pianist Kathrin Isabelle Klein were one of three selected duos to perform at the Lied Academy at the 77th Hitzacker Summer Music Festival. Their work as a lied duo has drawn inspiration from, among others, Ian Bostridge, Jan Philip Schulze, Anne Le Bozec, Ulrich Eisenlohr, and Charles Spencer.

They received scholarships from the 2022 German Music Competition and were also awarded a special prize. A joint radio recording was made for Deutschlandfunk.

In chamber music concerts and recitals, she creates individual programs juxtaposing repertoire from the Romantic and classical modern periods with contemporary music. Monika Abel has performed in South America and Australia with the Munich Philharmonic String Quartet and members of the Munich Philharmonic.

Her debut album “Between Heaven and Earth,” featuring songs by Strauss, Messiaen, Webern, and Finzi, released in February 2025, underlines her predilection for 20th-century music.

Monika Abel was born in Munich and received violin lessons at an early age and basic musical training at the Munich Cathedral Music Hall. She was a national prize winner in the Jugend musiziert competition in the solo voice category. She studied singing at the music academies in Freiburg and Stuttgart with Ulrike Sonntag, where she completed her Master of Arts with top marks. She completed her studies in the postgraduate course in solo voice with Elena Pankratova in Graz and the postgraduate course in song with Pauliina Tukiainen at the Mozarteum in Salzburg. During her studies she received support from the Live Music Now foundation. In addition to her training, Monika Abel attended master classes with Margreet Honig, Michèle Crider, Christoph Strehl and Marina Sandel. Engagements have taken the young soprano to roles such as Papagena (The Magic Flute) at the Stadttheater Lindau and Asenath (Benjamin) at the Junge Oper Stuttgart.

In addition to her solo performances, she regularly performs in professional ensembles, including the Bavarian Radio Concert Choir and the SWR Vocal Ensemble. She has worked with renowned conductors such as Zubin Mehta, Sir Simon Rattle, Pablo Heras-

Casado, Andris Nelsons, and Christian Thielemann. She was also part of the Utopia Choir at the Salzburg Festival under the direction of Teodor Currentzis.
